The Brujos attended the annual Santa Fe Fiesta Tens tournament on Sunday September 6th, Labor Day weekend 2015.
Hosted by the Santa Fe Santos Rugby Football Club, the 10's style variation of rugby was a welcome change to the summer seven's series. Ten's rugby consists of ten players per side and ten minute halves.
The morning of the tournament brought competition from across the southwest. The Brujos first match was against their cross town rivals, the Albuquerque Aardvarks. Victory was sealed for the Brujos in a 21-5 win. Next up in pool play was the El Paso Scorpions who were the 2014-2015 DII leaders in the Rio Grande Union. The Brujos were able to take down the Scorpions, 26-16. Game three rounded out the morning against Adam's State College from Alamosa Colorado. The points came easy for the Brujos in a 31-12 win over the students.
Next came the semi-finals, which matched the Brujos with a strong, and not entirely college student, side from New Mexico Tech. The long day was starting to take it's toll on the players as they weren't moving as fast, and the points weren't stacking as easily. At halftime, the score was tied at 12 points. NM Tech head coach Dave Wheelock had this to say: "The collegians' lack of experienced substitute players finally caught up with them in the second half as the Brujos put two more tries on a tiring Pygmy team." The Brujos beat the Pygmies 24-14.
The final match was between the Brujos players, and a Motley side sporting the name and wearing the jerseys of the Colorado Springs Grizzly's, known that day as the "Cameltoes." Players from Colorado Springs, Alamosa, and Frontier Union Chamions-Las Vegas Vatos wore the patriotic jerseys for the Colorado team. The score was tied at 0 all until just before the half when the "Toes" were able to put up a 5 point try before the halftime whistle. Six pair of fresh legs put in for the second half by the "Toes" giving them some new energy, despite receiving a yellow, and a subsequent red card for lifting an opponent in an unsafe and uncontrolled manner. Minor mistakes by the Brujos led to a couple scoring opportunities for their opponents. The final was 17-0 in favor of the Grizzlies.
